Roles & Responsibilities:
MITRE | Australia is leading the advancement of national security through cutting-edge Digital Mission Engineering (DME), placing a strategic emphasis on Electronic Warfare (EW) and related mission-critical domains. As a Project Lead, you will play a pivotal role in shaping Australia's Electronic Warfare capabilities within the broader Command and Control, Communications, Computers, Cyber; Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance, and Electronic Warfare (C5ISREW) portfolio.

This position extends beyond technical leadership, positioning you as a trusted advisor to senior Australian defence leaders-including strategic stakeholders within the Royal Australian Navy (RAN)-while managing a geographically diverse, multidisciplinary team. Your expertise in EW and digital engineering will directly contribute to solving Australia's most pressing national security challenges. Additionally, you'll help build a long-term strategic relationship, deepening the partnership between Australia and the U.S., and expanding MITRE's global presence.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead MITRE's strategic projects in Electronic Warfare within Australia, managing cost, performance, and schedule to deliver impactful and innovative outcomes.
  • Serve as an Electronic Warfare Subject Matter Expert (SME), providing critical advisory and systems engineering support to senior Australian defence stakeholders, including key leaders within the RAN.
  • Foster and maintain strategic partnerships across Australia's defence ecosystem, proactively identifying new opportunities for MITRE to drive mission impact, particularly focused on advancing EW capabilities.
  • Establish foundations for enduring strategic relationships within Australian defence, aligned with broader Australia-U.S. strategic priorities, with Electronic Warfare as a central pillar.
  • Provide visionary leadership to influence the future strategic direction of Australia's EW and digital transformation initiatives, ensuring alignment with mission-critical defence priorities.
  • Collaborate across MITRE's global enterprise, leveraging the full scope of organizational expertise to ensure deliverables consistently align with Australian EW and national security objectives.
  • Represent MITRE externally, strategically positioning the organization as a valued partner capable of addressing complex EW-related challenges and broader national security priorities.
  • Shape MITRE | Australia's trajectory and mission, actively guiding its growth, culture, and strategic direction, with a clear emphasis on Electronic Warfare as a core capability area.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Typically requires a Bachelor's degree in engineering, physics, mathematics, information systems, computer science, or a related technical discipline and a minimum of 8 years of related experience, including extensive experience in systems engineering, technology analysis, and leading increasingly complex projects; or an equivalent combination of related education and professional experience.
  • Technical and domain expertise in at least one of the following areas: Electromagnetic Maneuver Warfare (EMW), Electronic Warfare (EW), or sensor systems.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in applying systems engineering principles and methodologies to complex technical and operational challenges.
  • Exceptionally strong written, verbal, briefing, analytical, and organizational skills, with the proven ability to clearly articulate complex ideas, translate analytic results into actionable recommendations, and communicate effectively with senior-level decision-makers.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully lead and manage high-performing, geographically diverse teams in dynamic and collaborative environments involving senior government officials and a broad set of internal stakeholders.
  • Must have prior experience working specifically at a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC), with a minimum of 2 years in a relevant role. Must also be capable of effectively representing the FFRDC brand, mission, and knowledge base to international partners who may be unfamiliar with the US FFRDC model, ensuring clear communication and fostering understanding of its unique structure and value .
  • Proven experience consistently delivering high-quality technical products on schedule and within budget, effectively leveraging internal expertise for peer reviews and technical validation.
  • Demonstrated capability to build and maintain trusted partnerships with government sponsors, translating sponsor requirements and gaps into concrete tasks and successfully delivered solutions.
  • Ability to model, reinforce, and promote MITRE's cultural attributes within the project team, including grace and respect, collaboration, adaptability, speed, and informed risk-taking.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute expertise to support work-shaping initiatives beyond immediate project scope (department, division, or center-wide activities).
  • Flexibility and willingness to live and work on-site in Canberra, Australia, committing to a multi-year assignment.
  • Possession of an active US TOP SECRET Security Clearance, and the ability to maintain it.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, Statistics, Mathematics, Physics, or a closely related technical discipline.
  • In-depth operational knowledge of Navy or DoD platforms, missions, and maritime operational environments.
  • Direct experience collaborating with maritime Electronic Warfare communities, with familiarity of their unique operational capabilities, challenges, and emerging trends.
  • Working knowledge of "Five Eyes" Electronic Warfare stakeholders, including familiarity with international EW coordination, operational frameworks, and collaboration mechanisms.
  • Demonstrated success in leading capability-based assessments (CBAs), gap analyses, strategic technology road mapping, and Concept of Employment (CONEMP) development.
  • Extensive experience solving complex, multi-disciplinary engineering and mission integration problems, particularly in maritime defence contexts.
  • Proven leadership in developing and implementing innovative, high-value strategies aligned with senior sponsor objectives and priorities.
  • Experience actively shaping strategic project outcomes through proactive collaboration with defence sponsors and MITRE internal stakeholders.
  • Experience serving as a trusted advisor to defence sponsors, particularly in Electronic Warfare, systems engineering, or strategic mission engineering contexts.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate and align multiple, complex project activities in support of strategic MITRE Australia goals.
  • Demonstrated understanding of International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and Export Control requirements, with practical experience navigating compliance in multinational defence collaborations and technology transfer scenarios.
  • International professional experience, specifically with cultural understanding and operational familiarity within Australian defence or governmental environments.
  • Practical understanding of international business practices, operational rules, and sensitivities, especially related to defence and security collaboration overseas.
  • Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally as required.
  • Possession of an active US TOP SECRET SCI Security Clearance, and the ability to maintain it.
