Based in Hawaii and operating at the heart of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (USINDOPACOM), our team plays a critical role in shaping the future of joint and coalition military operations across one of the most strategically important regions in the world.

Roles and Responsibilities:

MITRE | Indo-Pacific Regional Operations is driving innovation and operational impact at the intersection of data, technology, and mission readiness. As a Lead Artificial Intelligence (AI) Integration Engineer supporting U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (USINDOPACOM), you will play a pivotal role in accelerating the adoption of advanced AI and machine learning (AI/ML) solutions across the Indo-Pacific Theater-where strategic competition and emerging technologies converge.

This is more than a technical role. Co-located with senior leadership at USINDOPACOM Headquarters in Honolulu, Hawaii, you will serve as trusted engineer providing technical and engineering rigor to guide decision making to senior leaders, helping to shape how AI and data-driven capabilities enhance warfighting readiness and decision superiority. From operationalizing existing tools to identifying scalable solutions for real-world problems, you will drive tangible outcomes that directly support joint and combined forces across all domains.

In this role, you will act as a connective force between operational priorities and the rapidly evolving AI landscape-enabling the smart integration of commercial innovations, government investments, and strategic partnerships. You will also help build the digital foundation for enduring capability delivery, ensuring that AI/ML initiatives align with command-level objectives, service component requirements, and cross-domain interoperability needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead AI/ML integration efforts in direct support of USINDOPACOM Headquarters, focusing on accelerating operational adoption of existing technologies across directorates, service components, and strategic partners.
  • Facilitate identification, refinement, and implementation of high-impact AI/ML use cases by aligning operational problem sets with available commercial and government-developed solutions.
  • Serve as a trusted engineer providing technical and engineering rigor, providing technical and strategic guidance on AI/ML capabilities that support mission planning, operational decision-making, and joint force integration.
  • Provide cross-cutting solutions across HQ staff elements and special staff directorates to ensure unity of effort, eliminate duplication, and synchronize AI/ML-related activities across the command.
  • Partner with DoD service providers and infrastructure stakeholders to help shape a regional framework for scalable, resilient AI/ML deployment, tailored to prioritized warfighting and operational use cases.
  • Develop and deliver tailored AI/ML training programs for staff and leadership, curating best-in-class industry offerings to build foundational literacy and mission-specific expertise.
  • Align AI/ML implementation with operational and technical objectives across USINDOPACOM, its Sub-Unified Commands, and component services, ensuring integration supports both current needs and long-term transformation.
  • Conduct operational, performance, and vulnerability assessments to to command leadership, providing clear insight into AI/ML progress, barriers to adoption, and paths to operational impact.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline such as Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace, Manufacturing, Computer), Physics, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field, and a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience; or a Master's degree and 6 years of experience; or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
  • Demonstrated experience deploying, implementing, or integrating AI/ML tools and data-driven applications within Department of Defense (DoD) or U.S. Government operational environments.
  • Familiarity with DoD operational missions, organizational structures, and planning processes, with prior experience supporting day-to-day work in secure, classified facilities.
  • Proven track record of integrating systems of systems in defense contexts, including alignment with joint, service component, or theater-level operational needs.
  • Deep understanding of cross-domain solution architectures and their application to secure, multi-domain environments.
  • Experience with Agentic AI concepts as applied to military use cases and task automation.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to clearly convey complex technical and operational topics to both senior decision-makers and multidisciplinary technical teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence outcomes and build consensus in cross-functional teams spanning government, industry, and the broader defense innovation ecosystem.
  • Active Top Secret clearance with the ability to obtain and maintain TS/SCI access.
  • This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site presence.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in a relevant technical field such as Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Operations Research, Applied Physics, or a related discipline.
  • Current understanding of emerging technologies being adopted into DoD acquisition programs, with specific relevance to the Indo-Pacific theater.
  • Demonstrated experience developing strategic implementation plans or roadmaps for technology integration, with a focus on transitioning AI/ML capabilities from prototype to operational use.
  • Experience advising or directly supporting Combatant Command or service component leadership, particularly in a joint or coalition environment.
  • Proven ability to lead or contribute to multi-disciplinary teams working on complex, mission-driven challenges involving AI/ML, data integration, or operational analytics.
  • Interest in or experience with MITRE leadership roles, including project lead, task lead, or strategic contributor at the department or division level.
  • Possession of an active TS/SCI clearance.


As part of MITRE's Push to the Pacific initiative, employees hired to this requisition may be eligible to participate in a Hawaii Rotational Incentive program. For select positions with high demand and difficult to fill skill sets, MITRE is proud to offer selected staff the opportunity to receive a 15% lump sum payment each year, for up to 3 years. The above figures are based on current base salary upon selection to the Hawaii Rotational Rotation Program, less tax withholding and other applicable deductions.
