Within BR&T's Mission System Technologies (MST) organization, Boeing's Advanced Computing Technology (ACT) team performs innovation, development and maturation of Advanced Computing and its associated subordinate technologies.

Boeing Research and Technology is looking for a Senior Thermal Lab Mechanical Engineer based in El Segundo, CA.

In pursuit of Boeing's research and business interests, the successful candidate will:
  • Work on world class, next generation disruptive technologies across the enterprise and at business partners and teammate facilities to develop, document, analyze, and test operational, functional, and environmental requirements of non-recurring development research systems.
  • Leverage knowledge and experience across a wide range of disciplines to maximize uptime of a cryogenic test facility.
  • Provide innovative approaches and unique solutions to address complex nonconforming conditions and detect deviations from operational requirements.
  • Provide high impact, creative and innovative solutions to complex technical problems
  • Work both independently and as part of a dynamic team environment alongside world-class research scientists and engineers


Candidate shall be able to show recent demonstrated ability in one or more of the following areas:
  • Ownership of complex fluid systems including functional demonstrations of the finished product.
  • Understanding of components such as rotating machinery, heat exchangers, instrumentation or control systems with ability to communicate dense technical concepts to less-experienced staff.
  • Knowledge of low temperature fluids at phase boundary conditions sufficient to monitor and make operational decisions in real-time.
  • Entrepreneurial self-starter that successfully outputs multidisciplinary engineering products
  • Participation in Research & Development of highly technical, cutting-edge engineering content.


Position Responsibilities:
  • Provide engineering guidance in service of test, operations and maintenance of a plant that processes many diverse commodities.
  • Champion safety culture by analyzing reported issues and recommend/manage resolutions.
  • Lead investigations of challenging technical, operational and quality issues to design interim and final engineering solutions for implementation.
  • Monitor and review process data to identify risks/issues and recommend improvements.
  • Distill complex technical operations into simple procedures optimized for first-time quality.
  • Evaluate customer/operational needs to update refrigeration supply hardware, integration of customer hardware and ensure compatibility of all physical, functional interfaces.
  • Partner with researchers and technology experts to understand technology development current state and future goals in order to inform test, verification and validation efforts.


Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):
  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science
  • This position requires an active U.S. Top Secret / SCI Security Clearance (U.S. Citizenship Required). (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active)
  • 5+ years of experience in leading a team of engineers, suppliers, and support personnel in the technical design, development, integration, and test of a large scale complex mechanical and fluid system test facility
  • Effectively communicate with technical and non-technical personnel at all organization levels including suppliers and customers


Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
  • Experience in a Lead Engineer role, responsible for ensuring system and product integration across multiple disciplines.
  • Previous technical ownership of high-cost hardware with responsibility to ensure performance supports operational needs.
  • Demonstrated leadership in finding root cause to technical issues and mitigating technical risk.
  • Familiarity with ASME Piping Codes and Standards.

Pay is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.

Summary pay range: $124,100 - $167,900
