Northrop Grumman Mission Systems (NGMS) seeks to fill a Systems Engineering Manager 1 in Mission Modeling and Simulation role based out of Rolling Meadows, IL. As a Systems Engineering Manager at Northrop Grumman and a member of the Mission Modeling Department, you will have a challenging and rewarding opportunity to be a part of our Enterprise-wide digital transformation, driving the larger organization towards model based systems engineering and mission engineering solutions.

What You'll get to Do:

This is a dual-role manager position, balancing the overall functional oversight and management of a Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) group of 10-15 engineers, against performance of productive work on a program or several programs. The candidate will spend ~20% of their time on support of the organization (functional duties) and ~80% of their time on technical program work.

The selected candidate will support the Systems Engineering Integration & Test (SEIT) functional organization as a member of the Mission Modeling department. The Mission Modeling department is Rolling Meadow's premier modeling organization, and joins with product-line focused systems engineers to develop and enhance products in the Aircraft Survivability, Radio Frequency Electronic Warfare, and Electro-Optical / Infrared Targeting business units. The Mission Modeling department provides MBSE subject matter expertise to the programs we join, while also supporting legacy fielded products developed with traditional document-based systems engineering practices. In addition, the Mission Modeling department develops modeling and simulation capabilities for use across the Northrop Grumman Corporation and by our US Government customers.

This position will specifically lead the Mission Modeling & Simulation team with the general responsibilities below:

System Engineering leadership
  • Your role as a System Engineering Manager will include a broad range of activities to include: requirements engineering, system architecture and design, interface management, verification, and IPT leadership.
  • Day to Day oversight of support to contract programs in all phases of the engineering life cycle to include concept evaluation, development, integration, production and sustainment programs.
  • Day to Day oversight of company-internal strategic programs developing modeling capabilities and performing mission engineering analysis.


MBSE Leadership:
  • Your role as an MBSE Manager will afford you responsibilities for:
    • Planning, developing, integrating, and maintaining: descriptive and mission models
    • Supporting integration of mission models with performance models and system architecture models
    • Developing a robust modeling and simulation ecosystem through the development of modular interoperable and inspectable models and modeling tools
    • Definition and refinement of SEIT Processes for executing programs using a model-based methodology


In addition, you will:
  • Oversee a team of engineers working multiple initiatives including follow-on contracts, new business growth opportunities, internal research and development, and capital projects.
  • Guide the team in support and adherence to standard SEIT processes and the oversight of cost, schedule, and technical quality for SEIT execution on supported programs, including functional reviews for major milestone events (SRR, PDR, CDR, TRR, etc.) and proposals as applicable.
  • Work on staffing and workload forecast; employee inclusion, engagement, mentoring and career development; employee training and identification, and training of skills required to execute on programs; management and execution of employee performance review processes; and leadership and execution for a multitude of functional management processes.
  • Collaborate with our talent acquisition team to meet staffing commitments.

This position will be full-time and on-site at our Rolling Meadows, IL. location

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in an engineering / technical discipline with a minimum of 8 years' experience or a Master of Science degree in an engineering / technical discipline with a minimum of 6 years' experience.
  • Proven demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication skills along with proven success working in an integrated product team environment.
  • Knowledge of MSBE principles and practices
  • Proficiency in modeling & simulation via scripting languages such as python, MATLAB or java
  • Experience reviewing, following and understanding software architecture and functionality in C++ or similar languages
  • Experience working MBSE projects.
  • Experience with MBSE methods, tools, frameworks, languages.
  • High proficiency in technical problem solving, to include decomposition, root cause analysis, solution development, implementation and monitoring.
  • This position requires the applicant to be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must have the ability to obtain an Interim Secret clearance prior to start date. Once started, must have the ability to obtain and maintain a full secret clearance.
  • Ability to obtain Special Access Program (SAP) clearances.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Active Secret / Top Secret Clearance.
  • Background and understanding in various tools and techniques associated with cost / schedule management (especially Earned Value Management).
  • Program Management experience or Functional Management experience leading teams including Systems Engineering, Integration, and Test.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience working in a systems engineering, integration, and test environment.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience with electronic warfare, EO/IR, laser, or related defense systems.
  • Experience in all aspects of the engineering process from proposal / requirements analysis through verification testing.
  • Proficiency in MS Project, MS Office, MATLAB, Simulink, Cameo, Model Based System Engineering (MBSE), and Agile techniques.
  • Proficiency in software development utilizing languages such as C++, VB or Fortran
  • Experience with software development pipelines and containerization tools such as git, Jenkins, or docker
  • Proficiency in AFSIM, Systems Toolkit (STK), or equivalent mission modeling tool.
  • Proficiency in the Systems Modeling Language (SysML), Unified Modeling Language (UML), or similar descriptive architecture language.
  • Proficiency in the Unified Architecture Framework (UAF), Department of Defense Architecture Framework (DoDAF), or similar Architecture Framework.
  • Master's degree in a relevant technical or management specialty.


Salary Range: $124,000.00 - $186,000.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
