Position Overview:
The Phlebotomist provides phlebotomy services in support of patient care and treatment while ensuring a professional, efficient, and patient-centered experience.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform phlebotomy procedures in accordance with standard operating procedures, American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) guidelines, and FDA regulations
- Greet patients, review lab request forms, schedule appointments, and verify patient identity to ensure accurate specimen labeling
- Confirm patient readiness and dietary compliance for prescribed tests
- Collect blood samples from adults and children using venipuncture or capillary puncture techniques
- Process blood specimens using appropriate preservatives or anticoagulants per test requirements
- Instruct patients on proper collection and handling of additional specimens (e.g., urine, semen, feces)
- Perform waived testing such as urine dipsticks as part of patient preparation
- Recognize and respond appropriately to emergency situations according to SOPs
- Prepare and ship blood products and specimens in accordance with established protocols
- Arrange special specimen transport when necessary
- Dispose of biological waste, needles, and hazardous materials safely and per clinic policy
- Communicate effectively with medical, clinical, and technical staff to resolve specimen-related issues
- Follow established laboratory procedures and remain informed of updates or changes
- Perform administrative tasks such as report preparation, supply storage, and documentation maintenance
- Prepare and restock the phlebotomy area at least twice daily, ensuring sufficient supplies are available and restocking is documented
- Maintain accurate records, including patient wait times and test tracking
- Participate in facility-specific and competency training as assigned
- Perform cleaning and maintenance tasks, documenting completion as required
- Assist with additional duties as needed and assigned
- Maintain a courteous, professional demeanor with patients and staff at all times
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent required
- Graduate of an accredited phlebotomy training program with a nationally recognized certification (ASPT, ASCP, or equivalent)
- Minimum of one year of full-time phlebotomy experience within the last three years (six months of technical training preferred)
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
- Proficiency in English communication (reading, writing, and speaking)
- Basic computer skills, including word processing, data entry, and use of electronic records
Physical and Environmental Demands:
- Regular and punctual attendance
- Frequent standing, bending, and walking
- Occasional lifting and carrying of medical equipment
- Moderate stress environment; may require extended hours during peak workload periods
- Prolonged computer and telephone use
