The Electronic Materials and Microsystems Group is seeking a Materials Processing Engineer to work on a variety of solid-state energy conversion and thermal management technologies.
The Research and Exploratory Development Department (REDD) at APL has a strong and growing R&D initiative to pursue innovative material and device solutions to support the ever-increasing demands of national security, space, and defense applications. In this role, you will apply a wide spectrum of engineering and materials processing techniques to support projects focused on the areas of energy conversion, thermal management, and beyond. The successful candidate will work and communicate closely and effectively with the technical team and project leadership to ensure all tasks are performed to extremely high standards.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development. Your duties will include:
- Conduct electronic material and semiconductor device processing such as: material synthesis, device fabrication, prototyping, electrochemical plating, photolithography, automated pick and place operations, and equipment operation and maintenance.
- Characterize and analyze test data for thermoelectric, alphavoltaic, and photovoltaic materials and devices.
- Communicate regularly with project teams on research and development activities to support programmatic needs. Actively participate in discussion of ideas, options, and approaches. Report progress in both oral and written form.
Qualifications
You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you:
- Possess a Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or a related field, or equivalent experience in an associated semiconductor materials and device processing field.
- Have 1+ years of laboratory experience in fabricating and characterizing semiconductor and other electronic materials and devices.
- Have experience organizing and maintaining detailed process inventories and experimental records.
- Have detailed data analysis skills and the ability to communicate in a team environment to discuss key findings, research insights, and future directions.
- Are proficient with Microsoft Office to include Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Are willing and able to travel occasionally to attend meetings with sponsors and academic conferences.
- Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you have:
- A Master’s degree in Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or a related field or equivalent experience.
- 1+ years of applied experience with semiconductor fabrication processes such as photolithography, plating, and physical vapor deposition including e-beam evaporation.
- 2+ years experience working with thermoelectric, photovoltaic, alphavoltaic, or related materials and devices.
