Northrop Grumman Space Systems-Launch and Missile Defense Systems offers an excellent opportunity for a Principal Engineer Systems - Global Algorithm Engineer (25-523) to join our team of skilled and diverse professionals. Located in Colorado Springs, CO, this position plays a vital role in supporting the U.S. President, the Secretary of Defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and operational levels.

This position does not provide relocation assistance and requires on-site work with no remote options.

Position Overview:

The Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) program is a crucial element of the Missile Defense System. It provides an essential operational platform that allows the U.S. president, the secretary of defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and tactical levels to systematically plan missile defense operations, monitor battle progress, and actively control networked sensors and weapon systems to meet global and regional mission objectives. C2BMC offers a layered missile defense capability, providing an optimized response to threats across all ranges and flight phases. It acts as a force multiplier by connecting, integrating, and synchronizing autonomous sensor and weapon systems and operations both worldwide and locally to enhance overall performance. Additionally, C2BMC is a key component of all ground and flight tests that verify and demonstrate the missile defense system's current and future capabilities.

As an Algorithm and Control Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, integrating, and testing tracking, custody, and firing algorithm solutions, as well as developing and validating complex models and simulations. You will collaborate with a highly skilled team of systems engineering technologists and algorithm developers to support various contracts and IRADs. A successful candidate has experience in systems engineering, algorithm design, systems analysis, and software engineering. The candidate has working proficiency in software languages (including Java and Python). They also have experience with algorithm design and mathematics, along with an understanding of physics, estimation, probability, statistics, and machine learning. Additionally, knowledge of numerical computation approaches and data science foundations is preferred. Strong technical writing skills are required, as all algorithms are thoroughly documented.

  • Experience in coding and peer reviews
  • Seasoned reviewer of technical documents
  • Seasoned root cause analysis specialist
  • Experience in process auditing
  • Degree in advanced mathematics with an emphasis on physics
  • Self-starter who is detail-oriented, well-organized, and able to self-prioritize and complete tasks within a dynamic and demanding environment
  • Strong interpersonal and conflict management skills working in a diverse environment across multiple disciplines
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of creating and delivering briefings and status reports
  • Experience in qualitative assessment and analysis of algorithms
  • Experience tuning complex algorithms
  • Physics (aerodynamics, astrophysics)

• Experience in signal processing

Basic Qualifications:

Please list your current security clearance and IAT or relevant certifications on your resume, if applicable.

  • A Bachelor's Degree in a STEM Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field from an accredited university is preferred, along with 5 years of experience; or a Master's degree (preferred) in a STEM related field with 3 years of relevant work experience; or a PhD in a related field with 1 years of relevant work experience
  • Applicants must have a current, active in-scope DoD-issued Top Secret security clearance at the time of application, which is required to start
  • Mathematical background and algorithm experience in at least one of the following:
    • Optimization
    • Machine learning
    • State estimation
  • Experience in systems analysis and Sabremetrics-like studies focused on trend identification, process improvement, and error reduction
  • Software Quality Engineering and related discipline processes, including Systems Engineering Methodologies (Model-Based and DoDAF)
  • Basic understanding of programming languages like JAVA and Python

Additional Northrop Grumman Information: Performs technical planning, system integration, verification and validation, cost and risk, and supportability and effectiveness analyses for total systems. Analyses are performed at all levels of the total system product, including concept, design, fabrication, test, installation, operation, maintenance, and disposal. Ensures the logical and systematic conversion of customer or product requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints. Performs functional analysis, timeline analysis, detailed trade studies, requirements allocation, and interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into hardware and software specifications.

Primary Level Salary Range: $100,300.00 - $150,500.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
