Role Summary

The Manufacturing AI Installation Technician is responsible for building, installing, and maintaining Petra AI devices & systems across the plant.

This role blends hands-on fabrication with on-line installation work across all shops at Normal, or new Normal building, ensuring cameras, brackets, enclosures, and support structures are safely and robustly installed for 24/7 industrial use.

Responsibilities

  • Fabrication & Assembly
    • Fabricate and assemble brackets, frames, and supports using aluminum extrusion (e.g., 80/20), steel, and plastics.
    • Cut, drill, tap, and finish components using band saws, drill presses, hand drills, grinders, and other standard shop tools.
    • Read basic mechanical drawings / sketches and build to spec with minimal rework.
  • Station Installation (Body / Paint / GA)
    • Install Petra AI devices, camera mounts, and enclosures in Body Shop, Paint Shop, and General Assembly to defined standards (height, angle, clearances, datum references).
    • Route and secure cables (power, Ethernet) neatly and safely through existing trays, conduit, or new supports, following Rivian safety and labeling standards.
    • Work around existing tooling, robots, conveyors, and access platforms; coordinate with ME, Controls, and Operations to schedule work in live production areas.
  • Field Adjustments & Quality
    • Perform on-line adjustments to camera aim, focus, and framing working alongside AI and controls engineers during station bring-up and trials.
    • Verify mechanical integrity of installations (torque checks, fastener verification, guarding, clearances to moving equipment).
    • Document as-built conditions (photos, simple sketches, measurement logs) and feed back improvements to standards.

  • Safety & Work Practices
    • Safely use ladders, scissor lifts, and platforms to access elevated installations; follow all fall-protection, LOTO, and area access procedures.
    • Maintain an organized work area, manage small hardware inventory (fasteners, brackets, extrusion), and keep shared tools in good condition.
    • Support safe integration of Petra hardware around robots, weld cells, ovens, and conveyors in partnership with Controls and EHS.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
    • Partner with Manufacturing AI team to translate station concepts into practical mounting and routing solutions.
    • Coordinate with shop engineers / operations to minimize downtime during installs and rework.
    • Provide clear status updates on installation progress, issues, and material needs.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 2+ years of experience in a manufacturing, maintenance, fabrication, or industrial installation role (e.g., ME tech, maintenance tech, machine builder, installer).
  • Demonstrated ability to safely use hand and power tools (drills, saws, drivers, grinders, taps, etc.).
  • Experience with basic metal fabrication, including drilling, cutting, deburring, and assembling structures.
  • Ability to work at height (ladders, platforms, lifts) and in production environments (noise, heat, overspray, tight spaces) while following all safety requirements.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to ~50 lbs and perform repetitive physical tasks throughout the shift.
  • Comfortable using basic computer tools, such as email and Client Office and/or Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Drive), to record work and communicate with the team.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with aluminum extrusion systems (e.g., 80/20 or similar) - cutting, tapping, squaring, and assembling frames/brackets.
  • Prior installation work in Body Shop, Paint Shop, or General Assembly (e.g., cameras, sensors, tooling, guarding, or vision systems).
  • Familiarity with reading simple mechanical drawings or layouts and transferring dimensions to the physical install.
  • Basic understanding of industrial cabling (Ethernet, power) and best practices for strain relief, labeling, and routing.
  • Experience supporting machine vision, sensors, or automation projects is a plus.
  • Comfortable working cross-functionally with ME, IE, Controls, Operations, and external contractors.

Behavioral Expectations

  • Ownership: Takes full responsibility for the quality and completeness of installations; escalates risks early.
  • Safety First: Consistently follows Rivian safety standards and challenges unsafe conditions or shortcuts.
  • Bias for Action: Moves quickly while maintaining quality; comfortable working around production schedules and tight windows.
  • Collaboration: Communicates clearly with engineers, technicians, and operators; open to feedback and continuous improvement.
  • Craftsmanship: Cares about tidy, repeatable, and serviceable installs (clean routing, consistent hardware, documented standards).
