Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes operating automation, emergency dispatching and communication systems; question callers to dispatch the necessary Police, Fire and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to the scene; accomplishing several tasks at one time such as operating radios, telephones, and typing; serve as a mentor by providing and explaining guidance on emergency service dispatching policies and procedures.. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service GS-07.
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

- Perform caller interrogation to determine type of response to dispatch police, fire, and EMS personnel and equipment as needed.
- Maintains constant communication with incident commanders and first responders, while documenting critical information like vehicle status, road closures, and system outages for senior officials.
- Operates as a central point for relaying emergency information to other jurisdictions, managing mutual aid requests, and notifying officials of changing conditions affecting operations.
- Responsible for identifying problem areas with subordinates and initiating appropriate action to effectively eliminate the problem(s)
- Drafts critical documents for day-to-day operations, including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs).
- Provides information and expert advice to the Supervisor Dispatch Tech and other leaders regarding best business practices and operational improvements.
- Plans, schedules, supervises, trains, and evaluates the performance of subordinate team members.
- Set employee standards for performance and prepare performance evaluations.
- Identifies developmental and training needs for subordinates, provides coaching and counseling, and effects minor disciplinary measures when necessary to maintain standards.
- Monitors and processes workflows to detect and resolve problems with CAD hardware, software, telephone equipment, and other programs that operators cannot solve.
- Make recommendations concerning the maintenance or replacement of equipment to ensure the dispatch center remains technologically current and effective.
- Assists software technicians in testing new applications and maintains personal proficiency for all communication and data processing equipment.

- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
- Incumbent must obtain and maintain DoD Telecommunication I and II (or equivalent) Certification within 6 months of employment.
- Incumbent must obtain and maintain DoD HAZMAT Awareness Certification within 6 months of employment.
- Incumbent must obtain and maintain certification in Basic Life Support for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) within 6 months of employment.
- Incumbent must obtain and maintain Emergency Police Dispatch certification within 12 months of employment.
- Incumbent must obtain and maintain Emergency Fire Dispatch certification within 12 months of employment.
- Incumbent must obtain and maintain Emergency Medical Dispatch certification within 12 months of employment.
- Continuing dispatch education (CDE) required through in-service training offered locally. Must maintain an overall compliance score in the performance of duties of 90 percent, or better, as reviewed by the Advanced Quality Assurance (AQUA) software.
- Position requires incumbent to work 12-hour rotating shifts which includes days, nights, weekends and holidays.
- Position is mission essential, incumbent is required to work regardless of weather conditions, Terrorist Force Protection Condition (TFPCON) or installation closure and required to report to the duty station at the regularly scheduled time.
- Subject to call back and on-call as the mission requires.
- This position is subject to pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 11. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.
- This position is supervisory as defined by the Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) General Schedule Supervisory Guide (GSSG). A one year probation to assess your ability to perform supervisory duties is required unless previously completed.
