The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, is located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a highly motivated technology commercialization manager to join the APL 's Legal and Commercialization Branch.
The technology commercialization manager works with the Tech Transfer Group Supervisor and other Legal and Commercialization Branch staff to manage and license a portfolio of engineering, scientific, information processing, and other technology focused intellectual property by analyzing, recommending, and implementing IP protection and transfer/transition strategies.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development. The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, is located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a highly motivated technology commercialization manager to join the APL 's Legal and Commercialization Branch.
The technology commercialization manager works with the Tech Transfer Group Supervisor and other Legal and Commercialization Branch staff to manage and license a portfolio of engineering, scientific, information processing, and other technology focused intellectual property by analyzing, recommending, and implementing IP protection and transfer/transition strategies.
As a Technology Commercialization Manager:
- Your primary responsibility will be to work closely with APL innovators, APL leadership, and fellow technology commercialization managers to assess, market, and license APL intellectual property to industry and other non-governmental organizations. You will negotiate directly with licensees with a goal of closing high-impact license agreements. In addition, you will support APL efforts to facilitate creation of new technology start-up companies licensing APL IP.
- You will provide cradle-to-grave IP portfolio management for technologies developed by APL in the engineering and physical science domains.
- You will perform tailored research and analysis on a variety of issues including strategic patenting trends, innovation commercial viability, technology landscapes, and technology transfer/transition best practices of importance to APL.
- You will leverage engagement with industry and the investment community to stimulate innovation, present new business and research opportunities, and promote staff engagement with the APL commercialization process.
- You will coordinate with APL patent counsel to evaluate, secure, and maintain intellectual property protection for relevant innovations within your assigned IP portfolio.
- You will be responsible for managing and guiding your portfolio to align with APL strategic objectives.
Qualifications
You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...
- Have a Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or other physical science or engineering fields with at least 10 years of industry or technical experience.
- Have 5 or more years of direct experience in technology licensing and IP
- Have strong leadership, communication, research/analytical, organizational, creative, and problem-solving skills.
- Have the capacity to positively, productively, and proactively interact with APL innovators, APL leadership, and industry contacts.
- Have proven ability to prioritize IP and assess its impact, generate licensing opportunities, negotiate terms, and execute agreements.
- Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Top Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
- Are willing and able to travel up to 10% of the time.

- Have an additional degree above the required, such as a Master of Science, Master of Business Administration, Juris Doctor, or Doctor of Philosophy.
- Have experience working with the U.S. Department of War or other federal government agencies.
